Family Time in the Smokies

“The Smokies Are Calling” is the new advertising campaign to bring attention back to the East Tennessee mountains for the start of the Spring tourism season and a more fitting phrase can not be found. Right now, flowers are blooming, trees are turning green, grass is showing back up on lawns, fields and between the rocks on mountain walls. The temperatures are generally getting closer and closer to the 70s on average and we’re even going to have Daylight Savings Time coming up here in less than a week. Can you believe that?

It’s as close to being Spring as it can get without being officially so. Are the mountains calling? They certainly seem to be with all the effort being made by nature itself to bring folks back to it.

Part of the big push for the advertising campaign is that we want people to know that, contrary to what many people were posting on Facebook at the time, the city of Gatlinburg in its whole did NOT burn down. In fact, almost all of the downtown area was untouched, but the way people were posting it on Facebook made it seem like there’d only be a smoking ruin where Gatlinburg used to be. Can’t blame’em, at the time no one knew what was going to be there and not and a lot of rumors and tension were going on to acerbate it. Today all the questions are done and settled – yes, some things burnt down entirely, but an overwhelming majority of things visitors look to do in the Smokies more than survived and the city is back in business the same as it was for Spring 2016, Spring 2015 and on back.

Now what we look at for the coming season is how to make the most out of Springfest. Spring Break is coming up and for older families with college-age students, this is an awesome opportunity to get some relaxation in and give your kid a much-needed break from studies. Dollywood opens back up with Festival of the Nations on the weekend of the 18th and you won’t want you and your family to miss that either. No matter what your family’s interests are, you can find ways to enjoy them here in the Smokies.
